Successful Exhibition

Added: 2nd May 2016

Just had a great show at Birdwood House Gallery in Totnes. I sold several pieces and met lots of lovey people. It's great to share your work and even better when folks decide to buy. I sold, amongst other smaller items, an Elm chest and an Ash coffee table - now in their new home and hopefully to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Birdwood Gallery Exhibition April 2016

Exhibition in Totnes May 2014

9th April 2014

I am delighted to be having an exhibition in Totnes, this Spring, showing a collection of my latest work - smaller pieces often made in two's and three's.

The show will be at Birdwood House Gallery (see attached poster) from May 18th - 24th, open from 10am to 5pm. This is a lovely little gallery, usually showing fine art, so it will be great to show something different and for people to see the work of a local furniture designer/maker.
I will be there everyday and would be delighted to meet people and chat about my work. Everything will be for sale and I will also be showing some of my recent prints (something I have been doing since early 2013 and thoroughly enjoy).
So, please put it in your diary and come along and have a look - and maybe even buy an original piece of handmade furniture!
I look forward to seeing you there.

Another successful show...

The Devon Furniture Makers Association has just completed it's 4th annual exhibition and the show was a great success. Over 1000 people visited the gallery and several pieces were sold.
It was great to meet people and talk about my work, and to have such positive feedback about my furniture. I showed two new pieces which were warmly received, but unfortunately not, as yet, sold!

Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design

18th August 0007

Celebration of Craftsmanship at Thirlstaine Long Gallery, Cheltenham 18th-26th August 2007

I exhibited three pieces at this years show, now in it's 14th year. The private view was very busy and there were many visitors over the ten days of this prestigious exhbition. It is always interesting to meet other makers and talk to the public about my work.
The exhibition also saw the launch of Betty Norburys book 'Bespoke', an extensive source book containing information about UK based designer/makers: how to commission work, where to find us and, not least, an extensive selection of our work. My Tall Cabinet is featured on page 109!

Beech Tree Milled and Sticked

6th February 2007

February 2007 : We managed to to get a large section of the beech tree back to the workshop.

Thanks to a local farmer we managed to get an eight foot section of the tree back to the workshop. It sat for a few weeks until Dave "Digger" Whorton could come with his mobile saw to mill the log.
The timber is now in stick in the woodstore, seasoning. Whilst not a popular wood for fine furniture this beech has some lovely brown figuring and I am looking forward to working with it when the time comes.

Beech Tree Falls

6th December 2006

On the night of 6 December, winter gales brought down a large beech tree in Littlehempston village.

In the early hours of the morning as a gale roared up the valley, we heard an incredibly loud crack. We checked the roof was still on the house and drifted off back to sleep.
The next morning we walked up to the village to find that a large Beech tree (140 years old on counting the rings), had fallen across the road, river and into a field.
The village came out in force to see the rather sad spectacle of the end of this beautiful trees life. But then it was time for action: chainsaws out and everyone doing their bit to clear up. I was already eyeing up the timber wondering how we could get it back to Lower Court.

Exhibition Success!

27th May 2014

Sales made and orders taken at my recent show in Totnes.

My recent exhibition at Birdwood Gallery in Totnes was a great success and it was lovely to meet so many people and receive all those positive comments about my work. I made several sales and took enquiries for further work, which I am now busy following up on.
Thank you to everyone who came and watch this space for further shows!

Latest from the workshop

24th April 2009

Having just completed another very large dining table I am now catching up on some overdue marketing and website admin.

Over the Easter weekend I delivered my latest commission - a large oak dining table for clients in South Devon. It looked great and they were thrilled which is always satisfying to hear.
I am now sorting out some timber for (hopefully) the next job as well as updating my websites and planning ahead for exhibitions.
the DFM (Devon Furniture Makers) are not having an annual show this year but are very excited about possibilities for exhibitions in 2010/11. The new venue (after successes at Dartington) is likely to be Rosemoor, in North Devon. The RHS gardens there are world famous and we plan to show a selection of our latest work at their gallery. I shall keep you posted on dates and developments.

20th January 2008

A great new book by Betty Norbury about British furniture designer/makers

This beautifully produced book was launched at the annual Cheltenham exhibition last year and is an invaluable source book for anyone interested in commissioning furniture, or just keen to see the array of talent within the industry.
I was delighted to be included and my Tall Cabinet in ash and walnut is featured on page 109.

Seasoning timber

1st October 2007

Another wood store...

A further wood store has been built to accommodate our expanding collection of seasoning timber, this time some local oak and cherry. Our contact telephoned with a tempting offer and we couldn't refuse! Of course, it's a waiting game now but in a few years I hope to be using some rather lovley, locally grown wood.

Article from Totnes Times promoting The Devon Furniture Makers annual exhibition

Text from article
"Eleven of Devon's finest contemporary furniture-makers and designers come together for an annual exhibition at Dartington College of Arts next week.
The talented group of artists will be showing their work at The Gallery between 10am and pm from Thursday, August 2 to Sunday August 5.
It will be an opportunity for members of the public to talk to members of the Devon Furniture Makers' Association and to see their work.
Natasha Gowdy, a furniture-maker based in Litlehempston, said: 'Many people are surpised how easy and rewarding it is to own a unique piece of hand-made furniture.
'We hope that this exhibition will inspire potential customers to commission furniture designed and made locally.'
